Portugal has built a reputation as one of the best countries in Europe to play golf with its fabulous weather, fantastic resorts, distinguished championship oceanic courses and stunning landscapes. There are around 70 courses in the whole of the country and less than 20,000 Portugese members. The beautiful Algarve stretches more than 200 kilometres of the southern Portugese coastline from the Spanish border in the east to the Costa Vincentina in the west. The courses at Quinta do Lago have won many awards and the iconic south course has been eight-time host of the Portuguese Open. Venturing away to west from Faro the Algarve has many other courses which although are perhaps slightly more rugged than the fancy Quinta do Lago but you will find equally great courses. They tend to be slightly more challenging as they can be hilly where the fairways roll up and down through hills demanding accurate shots and good placing. Parque da Floresta is an extremely popular course in this part of the Algarve and offers great deals for the perfect golfing break. The atmosphere at this course is friendly and relaxed and holds regular golf festivals, twice weekly competitions and boasts a busy social calendar for residents and visitors alike.
In the east Algarve the modern and luxurious Robinson Club close to the lovely old seaside town of Tavira is conveniently positioned between the famous courses Quinta da Ria and Quinta de Cima. Further on from here is the famous Monte Rei championship Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course which is located in the unspoilt countryside between the dramatic Serra do Caldeirão mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.
The famous oceanic courses in and around Vilamoura are simply not to be missed if you are golfing on the Algarve. Oceanico Golf is now the major player in Portugal´s distinguished golf tourism market, owning and operating one of Europe´s biggest portfolios of courses. Oceanico’s Faldo course is undoubtedly one of the best in this area designed by Sir Nick Faldo with strategic play in mind this 6598m par 72 championship course demands careful positioning to score well.
The capital city of Portugal is well known as one of the top city breaks in Europe with its wonderful architecture, history and culture. There are some great restaurants too serving delicious local dishes and fresh seafood. Many people combine a lovely city break in Lisbon with a few rounds of golf at some of the surrounding resorts. The Praia del Rey links is perhaps the most famous designed by American architect Cabell B Robinson. This course is naturally beautifully enhanced by world-class design and maintained to a high level. There are 2 loops of nine holes, has a par 72 and measures 6,405 metres from championship tees.
Located only 35 minutes north of the capital city of Lisbon is the Golden Eagle Residence and Golf Resort which is one of the most beautiful and challenging courses in Portugal. The golf course comprises of a challenging par 72, with tees to suit all abilities, a beautifully manicured layout the course also has 9 lakes recently decorated with eye-catching sprays and fountains. As you would expect of a golf course of this calibre there are some great facilities including an a la carte restaurant, golf academy, double end 400m driving range, putting green, short game zone, buggy fleet, electric and pull trolleys.
Another fantastic resort is Penha Longa which is located within a 545-acre national park on the southern Sintra Mountains. This luxurious resort has 2 golf courses, a stunning spa and 194 guest rooms with breath-taking views. The resort is located only 16 miles from Lisbon and was once the retreat of the Portugese royal family. This golf resort is ranked in the top 30 courses in Europe and the courses are both an adrenalin rush and a soothing journey through one of Portugal’s most inspiring landscapes.
Portugal’s island of Madeira is home to only 3 golf courses including the beautiful Palheiro Golf resort adjacent to the 5 star Relais & Chateaux Madeira Island Hotel Casa Velha do Palheiro. The 18 hole, par 72 Championship golf course meanders through a pristine environment of maritime pine and botanical woodland embroidered with lush, sub-tropical vegetation. There is a fourth championship golf course being built in Ponta do Pargo designed by famous golfer Nick Faldo which is to be commenced this year and is due to be completed by 2014. Something to bear in mind on Madeira is that the hotels in the hills where the golf courses are do not enjoy the same warm temperatures as those by the coast and can be chilly and breezy in winter.
